New Years on Mount Baldy

Mt Baldy (east of Oliver) is closed for the season, has the same elevation as big white, and has plowed road access and cabins available for rent.

Bam.

New Years with the Lillooet crew round two (plus some other people).  I hope this trend continues, and hopefully we will have a little less sickness and a little more stable temperatures next year.

Bikepacking 01: Okanagan Mountain Park

We had big plans on skis for this spring.  Many summits.  Much vertical.  Long story short, it didn't happen.  So we loaded up our bikes and hit a local park we hadn't explored before: Okanagan Mountain park.

We had been warned of overgrown trails, unmarked trails, unridable trails, bears, you name it.

There was a little bit of that, I guess, but mostly it was spectacular riding.

Some hills were a bit of a grunt.

We essentially circumnavigated the park through Wild Horse Canyon and then back over the KVR and down the Gillard FSR (an alternative descent would be through the Gillard trails, or Myra Bellevue).  Two days was very comfortable.  Counterclockwise was good - but if you wanted to avoid most of the pushing, I would recommend riding up Gillard and then clockwise through the park.

Fixie Winter

With this winter alternating between no-snow and too-much-snow, we have been spending a lot of time on our fatbikes.  These bikes were bought with a more utilitarian intent, but they have turned out to be pretty fun, too.

Packed trails help.  A lot.  With that in mind, if you are near Kelowna, check out:

- logging network off of the Sunset Main, near the top of the connector.
- the Kelowna Snowmobile club
- Posthill and area.
- Myra Bellevue park

Myra-Bellevue: Hiking the Burn

Original plans for this weekend - our first weekend of freedom - consisted of Mountain Biking locally on Saturday morning, followed by Ski Touring in the Coquihalla on Sunday.

Well.

As of last weekend when we drove by, the Coquihalla was under about a foot of water, and yesterday we woke up to six inches of snowfall here at our house.  Not the way things normally go, but I'll take some local snow without complaint.  We headed to our MTB destination on foot, so we could at least scope it out for springtime.

Gorgeous.  There is nothing like hiking through a burn after a big early season snowfall.  My pictures don't even come close to doing it justice.

We saw a large wolf as well.  Not pictured.

We ended up hiking (slowly) for about two and a half hours, doing a big loop through the park.  This was our first time, and we had no map - when we found our way back to the car, it had felt like a pretty long hike.  Without knowing anything about the park, I was worried that we had just spent a morning circumnavigating the entire park - it was fun, but if we could do all that in a morning on foot, we were going to run out of mountain bike real estate pretty quickly.

Not the case.  This is most excellent.  We will probably be able to spend all winter here on skis, and as soon as we have skiied it out, we can start exploring all over again on bikes.
